JONATHAN LEWIS LL.B.(Hons) (Manchester)
Jonathan Lewis was called to the bar in 1996.
Jonathan has two main sides to his practice. His commercial and chancery practice has an emphasis on both corporate and personal insolvency. He regularly acts for liquidators, administrators and trustees in bankruptcy.
In addition, Jonathan has developed a particular interest and specialism in construction and engineering disputes. He appears regularly in the Technology and Construction Court and in building and engineering related arbitrations and adjudications. Jonathan regularly acts and advises in professional negligence actions both for and against construction professionals including engineers, architects, contract administrators, surveyors and employer's agents. He advises and lectures regularly on insolvency related issues affecting the construction industry.

- Power v Brown and Ors [2009] EWHC 9(Ch) Chancery Appeal before Mr. Moss QC sitting as judge of the High Court concerning the assignment by a trustee in bankruptcy of a cause of action without the court's sanction and locus of third parties to treat a transaction as void under section 284 of the Insolvency Act 1986
- HFHA Group Limited v ASRA [2008] EWHC 2430(QB), [2008] All ER (D) 192, Sir Thomas Morison.- trial concerning a claim for a site finder's fee in excess of £3million.
- Leading Rule v Phoenix Interiors Limited [2007] EWHC 2293 (TCC), Akenhead J- Principles concerning appropriateness of determining preliminary issues.
- X-Section Limited v Celsius Energy Control Limited (2007) TCC, Jackson J. Enforcement of an adjudicator's decision where concerns over contractor's solvency.
- Humes Building Contracts Limited v Charlotte Homes Surrey Limited (2007) TCC HHJ Gilliland QC - Lawtel 4 January 2007; Building Magazine 27 April 2007. Enforcement of adjudicator's decision where an adjudicator had acted contrary to the principles of natural justice.
- Ujima Housing Association Limited v Building Principles Limited (2006) Ch.D, Briggs J. Jurisdiction of the court under section 51 of the Supreme Court Act 1981 to make a costs order against a director of a company where the director had improperly caused the company to serve a statutory demand.
- Andrews v Bohm and another [2005] All ER (D) 161, Mann J. First reported decision of the High Court confirming the jurisdiction to dispense with personal service of a bankruptcy petition under the Insolvency Rules.
- Re Palmiero [1999] 3 EGLR 27. Landlord's right to retain tenant's fixtures on forfeiture.
- Jay Benning Peltz (a firm) v Brian Deutsch [2001] BPIR 510 (Ch), Neuberger J. Chancery appeal concerning the interrelationship between the Insolvency and Civil Procedural Rules.
Recent unreported cases of note
- Building Principles Limited v Ujima Housing Association Limited - Acted for Ujima in an Adjudication (and subsequent arbitration) lasting four months, successfully resisting a £3.6million claim for alleged unlawful termination of a construction contract.
- London & Quadrant v Baker & Davies Plc and Pelling Limited - Acted for L&Q in multi-million pound litigation in the TCC Court concerning inadequate fire stopping in a development. Litigation included a claim for professional negligence against employer's agent.
- Crest Nicholson Plc v Apex Roofing Limited and Ors - Acted for Crest in multi-million pound litigation in the TCC court concerning defective roof tiling and construction at a substantial housing development.
- Jiggins v The Wilky Group Limited - Acted for the Claimant in a TCC action concerning defective piling of an industrial unit resulting in its collapse.
- Bridle v Miseagaes - Acted for the claimant in a TCC action concerning the professional negligence of a contract administrator/architect relating to the redevelopment of a substantial property in Brighton.
Lecturing activities
Jonathan has frequently lectured and written on a number of practice related topics both as part of the 9 Stone Buildings lecture series and in-house to solicitors and professional lay clients.
After his year at the Inns of Court School of Law, he was invited to return as a part time tutor which he did for a year during his pupillage.
