Stephen Arthur LLB, CTA, TEP Stephen Arthur qualified as a solicitor in 1974 with Herbert Smith & Co. He transferred to the Bar in 2002, after 20 years as lead tax partner with major City and West End solicitors' practices. He is experienced in UK domestic and international taxation, corporate and individual, including trusts, pensions and share option and estate planning (involving 'offshore structures' for many nationalities), and indirect taxation. He also has experience of partnership structuring and dispute resolution. Outside direct legal practice, Stephen Arthur has been a City merchant banker and (for 4 years) managing director in Switzerland of the trust company of a substantial Swiss private bank, which became part of one of the largest global banks and financial service groups. Both these experiences have enhanced Stephen's practical appreciation of the application of commercial pressures to legal problem solving. Stephen Arthur is a member of the Chancery Bar and Revenue Bar Associations. He has been a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) since 1974, and was appointed Chairman of the European Branch of CIOT for 8 years from 1998. He is a former member of the City of London Solicitors' Law Society Revenue Law Committee (instrumental in making fiscal representations to the Inland Revenue at the highest level). He is a tutor/examiner to students sitting the internationally recognised STEP Diploma in International Trust Management and to the Advanced Professional International Tax Diploma, editor of the STEP Journal, and a well-known contributor to domestic and international tax and estate-planning journals and publications, including Tolley's International Tax Planning (now in 4th Edition) Tax on Transactions (a major loose-leaf work) Butterworth's Encyclopaedia of Forms and Precedents (Gifts ) Tax Planning International Tax Planning International Review Tax Advisor Trust & Estates Tax Law Journal European Tax Review He is joint author and consulting editor to LexisNexis' 'tax Efficient Will drafting', published in November 2007. Stephen has conducted tax litigation at all levels, from General Commissioners to the House of Lords, via all intermediate (and VAT) tribunals, and has settled numerous back duty investigation cases on favourable terms without resort to formal litigation. He is an accredited mediator, with practical experience of mediation of disputes between partners/partnerships private company shareholders trustees and beneficiaries, and Inland Revenue/taxpayers. Foreign languages Stephen speaks fluent French, and competent Italian, and can deal with documents in those languages. He also has a good understanding of written Spanish and German.
